Protect Yourself from Online Recruitment Scams

Job seekers are increasingly relying on online platforms to explore career opportunities. Unfortunately, this convenience has given rise to online recruitment scams, where fraudsters pose as legitimate employers or recruiters to exploit unsuspecting candidates. At Orion, your safety and trust are our top priorities. Here's what you need to know to protect yourself from online fraud and scammers.

Orion are Corporate Members of the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC) and the Employment & Recruitment Federation (ERF). This is confirmed here and here respectively.

Common Recruitment Scams

  • Fake Job Postings
Scammers create fake job that advertisements appear authentic. These postings often promise high salaries or remote work opportunities and may pressure you to act quickly.
  • Phishing Emails or Messages
Fraudsters send emails or messages pretending to be recruiters or employers, asking for sensitive personal information like your social security number, bank details, or passport copies.
  • Upfront Payment Requests
Scammers may ask for payment for visas, permits, training, work equipment, or application processing fees. Genuine employers never request money from candidates.
  • Too-Good-to-Be-True Offers
Offers with unrealistically high salaries, vague job descriptions, or no requirement for qualifications may be a red flag. An example of this is fraudsters indicating that you have in demand skills without stating them and asking for your CV to enable them to create a fake job to match.

How to Spot Recruitment Scams

  • Check Website
Check the recruitment company official website for the job posting. Be cautious if the contact information or website looks suspicious (e.g., misspellings in the URL or physical addresses belonging to other businesses).
  • Verify the Recruiter
Research the recruitment company on social media as bona fide businesses will have a rich history across multiple platforms. You can also check company registrations, accreditations or representative body membership. Orion are Corporate Members of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC). This is confirmed here.
  • Check Email Domains
Genuine companies typically use official email domains (e.g., @companyname.com). Be wary of free email domains like Gmail or Yahoo used for recruitment purposes.
  • Watch for Urgency and Professionalism
Scammers often create a sense of urgency, pressuring you to make quick decisions without proper verification. Poor grammar, vague details, or inconsistent communication are warning signs of fraud.

At Orion, we thoroughly verify job postings to ensure authenticity before they are advertised.
