Pasadena Livestock Show and Rodeo

Preserving the Past

We'd like to give a special mention to our very own Kevin Kinzie, Senior Account Manager, based in Houston, TX, for his commitment and selfless dedication towards his beloved Pasadena Livestock Show and Rodeo (PLS&R), which celebrates its incredible 75th anniversary this year.

The origin of the PLS&R started as a community-based organization in the city of Pasadena, just east of Houston. The intention was to not only bring its citizens together and offer opportunities for the community youth, but to preserve the cowboy lifestyle and moral convictions of an agricultural era that was fading away due to industrial development.

Kevin, who is part of Orion Group’s Houston office, has been a volunteer at the PLS&R for over 20 years, and currently sits on the Board of Directors. Kevin is well placed in the ‘energy capital of the world’, and often takes his long-standing clients and associates, who come from many of Texas’s leading downstream refining companies, down to the PLS&R for an experience they’ll never forget. The rodeo represents a tip of the hat (or Stetson!) towards maintaining the past and shows how it can still operate alongside the modern world of today. His clients also get to witness and experience a truly one-of-a-kind spectacular event, and taste some of the best Texan BBQ around!

The rodeo itself has grown over the years, attracting thousands of enthralled visitors to the event. To mark the 75th anniversary, the event will be held across 9 days, comprising of the PRCA rodeo, Livestock show, nightly entertainment, music, cook-offs, carnival, and so much more. So much so that the PLS&R has over 1,200 volunteers, including Kevin, to help over the course of the extravaganza.

Helping the Community

At the heart of the Pasadena Livestock Show and Rodeo, is the hard work the people, like Kevin, put in to raise much needed funds for the local community and preserving a way of life. Last year alone, the PLS&R helped raise over $600,000 in its annual livestock auction, which includes Livestock, Ag Mechanics, Creative Arts, Floral Design, and School Art from local area high school students, which include Pasadena ISD, La Porte ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Deer Park ISD, and Galena Park ISD. Since 2010, PLS&R has helped raise a staggering $5.5 million dollarsfor the area youth to go towards future projects and further education. These scholarships will help students at these schools to pay for tuition, related fees, and books while attending College, University, Jr. College or technical/trade school.

The rodeo starts Friday, September 20th and runs through Saturday September 28th. More information can be found here: www.pasadenarodeo.com

All of us at Orion Group would like to thank Kevin (and all the volunteers at PLS&R) for all of his efforts so far, and in the future, in helping keep the cowboy (and cowgirl) lifestyle alive and kicking.
