Product Development Engineer
Permanent
Location – Perth, Scotland
Salary – £38,000 + extensive benefits

The ideal candidate will have a University Degree in Science or Engineering and/or experience in Material Science and come from a manufacturing background.  You will be highly motivated, team orientated and have a probing and inquisitive mind as well as matching the below criteria:
  • Graduate in Science or Chemistry or Development Engineer with at least 2 years’ experience working in a similar industry.
  • A team player with the proven ability to think creatively and methodically, with a knowledge of products, materials, and process routes.
  • Expertise in manufacturing, R&D and Engineering, Chemistry and Ceramics.
  • An understanding of Lean Manufacturing and New Product Development methodologies.
  • An understanding of statistics and data analysis techniques to support development activities.
  • Ability to communicate at all levels, deal with complex technical problems whilst promoting change using influencing and persuading skills.
  • Drive to work on own initiative.
  • IT literate, good understating of Excel. Experience with CAD systems (e.g. SolidWorks) an advantage. Statistical software (like Minitab) also an advantage.
 
Purpose of the position:
 
Contribute to the planning and completion of technical projects as defined in the company’s growth strategy. These projects will include the development of new materials/products/processes, feasibility studies and researching best practice as well as new and emerging technologies.

Collaborate with colleagues in Continuous Improvement, Quality, Production and Process Engineering with problem solving, and improvement of existing products and processes.

Provide laboratory services to both internal and external stakeholders.
 
Primary areas of responsibility:
Development Projects
  • Specific responsibility for undertaking, coordinating, completing, and reporting activities in allocated R&D projects.
  • Undertake development activities in all projects, including product development and process improvement as required.
  • Work within the development project portfolio to ensure that the accountability and milestone deliverables are achieved in line, with the plan as agreed with senior management team and any external funding bodies.
  • Collaborate in the creation of development projects in conjunction with Technology Manager and other stakeholders.
  • Ensure that project output complies with the requirements of the company’s growth plans.
  • Actively participate in cross functional project teams as required.
  • Locate and develop external resources as required, particularly within academic institutions, other organisations, within Alleima, and equipment / material suppliers.
 
Laboratory Services
  • Microscopic analysis of materials and material structures.
  • Basic material properties including density and porosity.
  • Material strength testing.
  • Product and material life testing.
  • Evaluation of new materials.
General
  • Continuous development of own knowledge and expertise.
  • Capture and develop new ideas and applies them in a way that adds value to the business.
  • Share knowledge, skills, and best practice across the business.
  • Review and improve methods, tools, and processes within area of expertise.
  • To actively engage in the Company’s Safety-First culture. To adopt and apply the Company’s core values and code of conduct in all business and personal dealings
